PERFECT MEMOIRS
A PERSONAL HISTORY - Deborah Wilbrink
I was in burn-out mode in 2011. The last thing high school students need is a teacher who isn't radiating love, and I knew it was time for a break. Evert reminded me to “Follow your heart.” My heart led me to edit or ghostwrite over 50 memoirs and family histories for older people. I love history, story, and elders; I had found the perfect fit by opening Perfect Memoirs. I learned some graphic design and was able to give my clients their heritage books for the next generations in a one-stop-shop.
There were lots of people who preferred to do it themselves. For them, I gave 100s of speeches and workshops . Realizing there were few songs encouraging people to write their memoirs and family histories, I began recording some, and wrote a self-help book to go with them, Time to Tell Your Personal and Family History (shown below). The songs became an album, Time to Tell: Songs About Your Personal & Family History. And some of those Best Book Ever blogs and the life lessons learned from my clients' memoirs will resurface in Musings.
Life changes, and so has my writing. in 2023 I began writing from my heart, with my own voice, rather than ghostwriting memoir. I thank my clients for trusting me with their stories. I have learned so much from you! I'll be applying all those honed skills to write my own memoir, The Experiment, and stories for literary publication, with a short story collection as my goal. I've learned from other personal historians too, and I thank them. I'll be posting links to these folks soon below the Memoir Jukebox on this page.
